How to Grade a Driveway
Even before you layer your driveway with your preferred material, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, gravel, or interlocking pavers, your drywall needs to be leveled up.
Driveway designs differ from each other and require different levels of excavation.
You need to examine your area keenly before beginning the process. However, it’s quite easy to go overboard or even do less grading. So what does it take to achieve quality results? Read for a guide on how to grade a driveway.
Driveway Grading
The driveway grading approach is not similar for all types of driveways that can be installed. The different surfaces require distinct processes.
Some driveways can be graded by hand, while others require complex tools and equipment for quick and easy grading.
Follow these steps:
- Get a grader blender that is made to move dirt and rocks to a tractor. Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the proper way to use it.
- Set the bale at an angle of about 30 degrees and a good pitch so that it moves gravel as you pass it through. Ensure that you adjust until you have the right setting to get the work done.
- Begin working from one side of the driveway while lowering the blade onto the edge of the gravel and proceed slowly.Allow the blade to move the gravel back into the middle of the driveway and keep repeating the process.
- Continue returning the gravel to the center or crown with the blade. For a driveway with a crown offset, keep the crow on one side to facilitate proper drainage.
- Fill in potholes. Fetch gravel with a shovel and add to the holes.
- Adjust the pitch of the blade so that it allows you to smooth. Make more passes to ensure that the surface is at the right level and maintain your crown.
- Compaction is key for a good grinding job as it creates a strong and stable base on your driveway. To achieve this, press the gravel using a lawn tractor and roller attachment.
